Espen Sandberg

Espen Sandberg is a Norwegian film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for co-directing Kon-Tiki (2012), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).

Sandberg was born in Sandefjord, Norway, on June 17, 1971. He studied filmmaking at the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer. After graduating, he co-founded the production company Fantefilm with Joachim Rønning.

Sandberg's first feature film, Max Manus: Man of War (2008), was a box office success in Norway. It was followed by Kon-Tiki (2012), a historical drama about Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 voyage across the Pacific Ocean on a raft made of balsa wood. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and grossing over $150 million worldwide.

Sandberg and Rønning were then hired to direct Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $1.7 billion worldwide.
